Thumaita Tea Factory is a premier tea processing factory managed under the KTDA. It is located in Karumandi, Gichugu Subcounty, Kirinyaga County. It sits on the fertile southern slopes of Mt Kenya between River Thiba and River Kamweti. Thumaita Tea Factory was founded in 1975 on November 17. It has an installed processing capacity of 25million kgs of green leaf per year.
It has a total of 12,305 registered tea growers, smallholder farmers. The total area under tea is 2,142.59 hectares. It has an estimated 15,132,473 tea bushes. The peak daily green leaf is 140,000 kg per day.

A Journey Rooted

Altitude is 5,500 feet above sea level, and annual temperature is 15c to 22c with an annual rainfall of 1,800mm and humidity of between 72% and 76%. Soils are deep red volcanic soils. Water sources – The factory is situated between River Thiba and River Kwamweti and lies approximately 5km from Kamweti Forest, providing reliable water sources essential for tea production
